The great wide open

Open and limitless, the Delta is a place of movement, flow, and possibility. A shifting landscape that, while ancient, is always evolving. With the seasons, and the decades, waterways move, aided by the elephants and hippos that wade through them and break new ground.

The landscape changes over metres, not kilometres. Almost every few seconds, it looks completely different, although there are wide stretches of specific biomes. At any given point, the terrain might transform, bringing new life.

To not know what’s around the next bend, a swamp, a floodplain, a lagoon, a copse of trees, a soft sand road with prints inviting you to follow, but know that whatever it is, it will be abundant on a scale unlike anything you’ve ever seen. To see trees and grasses and skies reflected in puddles and pools and recognise that the world is as large above and below us as it is around us, and as full of life, stretching endlessly in every direction. To feel how vast and uncertain the landscape is, like life, but surrender to it, is to be in the Delta.

Scale is another thing that strikes you here. Enormous and unfenced, the concession is wild in the truest sense. Here, you can come across a pride of lions one of the guides, in all their experience and knowledge of the land, won’t know. A shift in territories or a search for food may have brought them. It’s also not uncommon, given the constant change in wind and water, to arrive at a sand road without any tyre tracks, and feel alone in the best way.

While the terrain may shift, there’s always water, and with it, life. Big and small. Every day, every drive. The water here doesn’t shift as much with the seasons on NG26 as it does in some parts of the Delta. It’s a constant presence.

Clean and clear, it travels over long distances slowly, carrying mostly sandy sediment, which sinks to the bottom along the way. So clear that you can see the sky, trees, clouds, birds, and sunsets – whatever is above it – reflected. This creates a sense of vertical openness that compounds the boundlessness leading towards the ever-unreachable horizon. You feel small, but free.

Where there’s water, there are insects and frogs. The abundance of water creates an abundance of shelter. All this brings an incredible diversity of birds to the Delta. A non-stop chorus of many different species at once – you can stop anywhere and easily spot four distinct species in just a few seconds. It’s a birders’ paradise. Colour carried by the winds, flight displays, mating dances – there is always movement in the sky.

The foundation of the Delta is sand, meaning you can travel off-road as much as you like. The terrain’s absence of rock removes the risk of damage and the hardiness of the landscape gives you license to explore freely. When following or searching for wildlife, this opens up a whole new world of possibility and adventure.

Wherever tracks lead, you can follow them, and the signs in broken leaves and scat, until you find what you’re looking for. An intuitive way to navigate the landscape that allows storytelling to unfold naturally.
