Singita Sabi Sand

Sabi Sand | October 2012

It is any guide’ and photographer’s dream to watch a black-maned male lion(Panthera leo)confidently stroll through his territory, in thick mist. The mood and atmosphere is electric as his tawny sleek body melts away within the blanket of blue, almost mystically. This particular male (known as a Majingalane male due to his area of origin) was all by himself on this particular occasion. He seemed to be moving with purpose, set on amission. He could have been in some sort of confrontationas he had a deep puncture mark on his left shoulderthat looked as if it had been inflicted by a claw of the opposition. He paced up and down with intent through a grove of tall marula (Sclerocarya birrea)trees. It was as if he were looking for a score to settle and was about to stumble upon his intended target at any moment. What a sight to have seen!
