Singita Game Reserves is known as a world leader in style and design, with 10 lodges that are a quintessential blend of rustic modernism in idyllic wilderness settings in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. This trend-setting safari operator recently introduced a new, custom-made line of staff uniforms that celebrates the trademark Singita flair, while offering comfort and protection from the elements in the African bush.
Singita’s Guy McGregor who heads up the Style, Design and Procurement department in Johannesburg, designed the stylish new uniform range together with colleague Georgie Pennington, and have created a collection of items that are the epitome of modern safari chic.
Says McGregor: ‘The idea with this re-design was to tailor the Singita uniform so that our staff will be proud to wear them. To achieve this, we worked a little magic tweaking traditional safari styles by making small adjustments such as taking in waist lines, lengthening shirts lengths, and adding slits on the sides of shirts to accommodate different body shapes. I believe we have created a collection that lends an Afro-urban edge to the Singita ‘look’ that will be comfortable to wear – and that will turn heads!’
The African safari look recently captured the imagination of leading American fashion designer Michael Kors who was so inspired by his vacations at Singita Lebombo Lodge in the Kruger National Park, that he selected it as his Spring 2012 collection theme, which he has coined ‘Afri-luxe’.
Guy McGregor is the appointed ‘gatekeeper’ of Singita interior design and styling, and has been instrumental in the creation of the company’s design ethos, specializing in product development, customization, visual audits, styling and refurbishments of visual product.
The new staff clothing range includes a variety of different looks while carrying through the overall theme with colours that radiate different shades of the African landscape. Daytime uniform items match cool, pale grey shirts with classic trousers and skirts, while evening attire pairs tops in warm charcoal shades with sand-coloured bottoms. Fabrics and accessories were sourced from South African artisans wherever possible, and all items have been manufactured locally.
With this selection of designer items filling their working wardrobe, the Singita team will no doubt be inspired to top their reputation for delivering guest experiences that are nothing short of life-changing, and which saw them scoop 1st place among the World’s Top 100 Hotels in the US Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards this year.
