Singita Serengeti Travel Diary

Kendra Vellante is a member of the team that represents Singita in the United States, and recently travelled from New York to Tanzania to visit Singita Serengeti and enjoy a glimpse of Green Season. Her whirlwind trip included stops at all six of Singita's lodges in the area, many action-packed game drives and a touching visit to see the Grumeti Fund's community projects in action. Here she shares some of her memories with us, as well as her gorgeous photos:

"One of the things I loved about coming to the Serengeti during Green Season is experiencing the amazing rain storms. These beautiful indigo clouds would appear in the distance and you could see the rain falling, and the animals hopping around with excitement. The rains were quick, and completely enhanced the colour of the land within half a day, turning everything green. On one side of the sky, the sun would be setting, peeking through clouds, and on the other side would be a dramatic lightning storm. Very surreal to experience during a game drive!"

"Since this time of year is just after the rush of the migration, the game viewing is unbelievable and there is so much variety in the animal sightings. There are herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebras and impala plus huge numbers of lion, wildcat, giraffe, and so many other unique species."

"My favourite wildlife sightings included two male cheetah brothers on the hunt, three or four different prides of lion, a pack of hyena protecting a cub from a male lion, leopard cubs playing in tree branches, a lioness looking after her cubs in a den while feeding, and plenty of giraffes and warthogs - two of my favourite species!"

"There were obviously many memorable moments during my trip, but one that touched me most was visiting the local community in Singita Grumeti. The way Singita and the Grumeti Fund work with the surrounding villages blew me away. We had the opportunity to learn how the kids are taught at the Environmental Education Center, and meet the local farmers and suppliers from GHOMACOS, a farmers co-operative. This co-op society provides fresh produce to the Singita lodges, while creating self-sustaining jobs and, from a conservation perspective, reduces the community’s reliance on bush meat and illegal hunting by providing alternative sources of food for families. Coming from a huge, fast-paced city such as NYC, this was a truly eye-opening, humbling experience that allows time to slow down and puts aspects of life into perspective."

"Another unique moment was when our guide at Singita Mara River Tented Camp in the Lamai region, took us for a game drive along the border of Kenya, and pulled over to set up a surprise bush breakfast alongside a grazing herd of zebra. It was as if we were in two places at once; Kenya and Tanzania. The breakfast served in the middle of this remote and untouched wilderness was one of the best meals I ever had. The menu included homemade muesli, fresh fruits, and freshly made egg sandwiches that were still warm! There are not too many days where you can eat a gourmet breakfast in between two countries, amongst a family of zebra, in the middle of the bush."

Singita is dedicated to environmentally conscious hospitality, sustainable conservation and the empowerment of local communities. The location and design of each lodge is carefully considered in order to have minimal impact on the environment, while ongoing conservation and community projects in each region benefit from the proceeds generated by these properties. We believe that the key to modern conservation is keeping tourism, the community and conservation in a constructive and positively enhancing balance.
