Discover the Serengeti: A Year-Round Destination

For many, the idea of the Serengeti landscape conjures visions of endless golden grasslands and the stark outline of dry, thorny scrub. This is indeed one face of this vast ecosystem, but it can also be a shimmering, emerald sea of dense vegetation and flowering plants; the 'Green Season'.

From November to March, the vast plains of this iconic safari destination grow lush and verdant as the occasional, brief downpours drench the earth in a period known as the "short rains". As the landscape bursts to life, huge numbers of plains game like wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, gazelle and antelope move into the area to graze. Usually concentrated around permanent water sources like rivers and waterholes, the animals spread out into the plains, making the most of the surface water and taking full advantage of the flourishing plant life.

Serengeti Green Season

The abundance of herbivores makes for a spectacular wildlife experience for guests. Although game is easier to spot in the drier months due to the shorter grass, the wetter summer months and the transformation of the savanna triggers the movement of large herds of wildebeest and zebra north to Kenya's Maasai Mara, and the cycle of the Great Migration continues. Migratory birds are also drawn to the region, creating a riot of colour and lots of opportunities for ticking a bucket-list species or two off your birdwatching list. Photographers also love the golden light that follows a brief afternoon shower, bathing the plains and lining the stormclouds in spectacular sunset colours.

Serengeti Green Season

At Singita Serengeti, none of these wildlife experiences would have been possible 15 years ago, when the ecosystem was so damaged by illegal hunting and a severe lack of environmental management that the plains were dusty and practically barren all year round. The establishment of the Grumeti Fund, our conservation partner in Tanzania, in 2002 had an enormous impact on the biodiversity of the region and continues to do so. Our dedication to preserving this pristine wilderness through active conservation management, collaboration with local communities, technological innovations and the deployment of well-trained boots-on-the-ground is affecting tangible change and sustainable results; protecting 350,000-acres of the previously neglected western corridor of the Serengeti for future generations.
