Singita Serengeti House: Cécile & Boyd’s Interiors

March 27, 2013 - Accommodation,Experience,Lodges and Camps,Singita Grumeti,Singita Serengeti House

Singita Serengeti House lounge

Singita Serengeti House, in the vast Grumeti Reserves in Tanzania, was opened earlier this year as an exclusive-use retreat, and in response to a growing demand from discerning travellers for privacy and flexibility. Its unique position in the heart of the Serengeti, offers breathtaking vistas from the slopes of Sasakwa Hill across the endless, open plains of this untouched wilderness. Top South Africa design team, Cécile & Boyd’s, crafted the exquisite interiors and have been involved in the conceptualisation of every one of our lodges and camps since Singita Ebony Lodge opened in 1993.

While what lies outside is rather spectacular, the interiors of Singita Serengeti House are also something to behold. Throughout the house, ample indoor and outdoor lounging and dining areas, all with uninterrupted views, provide relaxing spaces for guests to truly immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding landscape while enjoying each other’s company. A cool neutral palette of subtle, sun-bleached colours mimics the Serengeti grass plains, bringing the outside in.

Mirror is used throughout the house to maximise light and space. Humble materials in natural fibres, rattan, grass matting, polished cement floors, bleached, raw timbers and local stones bring an honest, earthy feel to the understatedly glamorous, boldly proportioned, light-saturated rooms curated with a modern African art collection by Kurt Pio and Sarah Pratt, artefacts and objects, and anthropologically relevant tribal sculpture. All the decorative pieces were designed and commissioned or sourced by Cécile & Boyd’s, including witty eye-catching papier-mâché hunting trophies and leather thong chandeliers inspired by Masai skirts.

All the suites have spacious bathrooms designed as luxurious extensions to the bedroom and living areas, with outdoor showers and private terraces. The private kitchen and resident chef caters exclusively to the needs of the party staying in the house, taking into consideration everything from individual food allergies to favourite cooking styles and flavours. Delicious food and an excellent wine cellar always forms an integral part of the Singita experience, and meals are carefully planned and orchestrated from candle-lit gourmet dinners to informal picnics in the bush.

A Groomed, Bespoke Country House

June 22, 2011 - Accommodation,Experience,History,Lodges and Camps,Sabi Sand

Singita Ebony Lodge – a groomed, bespoke Country House – a romantic mix of European and African heritage.

After a short closure a restored and re-invigorated Singita Ebony Lodge has just reopened.  Singita’s flagship lodge, Ebony Lodge overlooks the Sand River and is inspired by the original Lewis Camp.  Refreshed but true to its original design an authentic, colonial bush experience is represented by bold colours of Africa blended with real antiques, layers and florals that reflect the English heritage of a country home.

Geordi de Sousa Costa, from Cecile and Boyd’s, was involved in the original design of Ebony Lodge and was therefore highly qualified to advise on the way forward when we considered a refresh of the lodge.

Geordi’s interpretation is that Ebony’s style is unique.  She speaks about the beautiful finish that has built up over years of dedicated polishing and care, and the clever combination of African artifacts and European collectibles that would be typical in the bush home of a seasoned, high-end traveler.  Ebony is Singita’s flagship lodge and has a history and heritage that is unmatched.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge

May 21, 2010 - Singita Faru Faru Lodge,Singita Grumeti

Singita Faru Faru is located along the banks of the Grumeti River. In true Singita style the lodge is hardly visible from the road. It is so well disguised that you have no idea what to expect.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge - The Swimming Pool.

The surrounds at Singita Faru Faru Lodge are lush, far more tropical and overgrown than the surrounds at Singita Sasakwa Lodge or Singita Sabora Tented Camp.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge is the most modern of three Singita Grumeti Reserves lodges. Suites are spacious and they seem to breath by themselves, no doubt aided by the large electronic windows that open at the touch of a button (technology in the African bush is so much more impressive than technology in the city).

Singita Faru Faru Suite Interior.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge décor is fresh and modern and it perfectly suits and amplifies the setting.

The food is sublime, the lodge is tranquil in that close-to-water kind of way, the spa is unbelievable – not because of its size but because of its location and its view – and then there is the feeling, the essence of the experience that is Singita Faru Faru Lodge. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what this essence is but it is the reason that Singita Faru Faru Lodge makes a guest feel like a child being introduced to the magic that is the African bush, for the very first time.
